Question: What are two emotions the main
character has felt? What made the main character feel that
way?
I think the two emotions the main
character has felt are cheesed and imaginative, which are actually
contradictory. Then why would I say that? It is because the main character’s
complex personality.
In the previous reading responses, I
mentioned that Holden is a contradictory person which pulls him for the opposite
side. He is sophisticated, and he is also naive. He felt that the school is full
of hypocrites and people who looked good apparently but the inside wasn’t as
good as they looked, so he got tired of the school, and got kicked out of the
school as he wish, even it was because of his bad grades, he didn’t care at all.
He says bad words, smokes, even goes to the bar and calls for prostitute
(actually he didn’t do anything), but deep inside his heart, he still believe
that there’s the beauty of moral that exists in this society, and he keeps
looking for the only beauty. This is the reason why I think he is naïve, because
almost nobody at that time still believes that there is beauty of moral. He
wants to be the catcher in the rye, not a business man, not a manager, not any
job that could make him famous or wealthy, just a simple job of being a catcher
in the rye, and avoiding kids from running to the dangerous places, just that
easy.
So he was lost, and that why he felt
cheesed and imaginative.
